Event DESCRIPTION

In partnership with The Forbes Funds, UMi-Versity is offering the “Intro to Data Sovereignty Workshop Series” this Fall 2024. This three-part public webinar series explores theories, practices, and praxes of Data Sovereignty (DS), the Conscious Attention Economy (CAE), and their relationship to our everyday and professional worlds. We will learn ways to navigate a present and future where our data is being used to target us and our attention in physical and digital spaces. We will also study how to mindfully wield our attention and become data sovereign—via presence, ownership, and stewardship of our data—as a means to strategically navigate these domains. And, finally, we will explore how to (a) potentially monetize our data to fuel our own socioeconomic mobility as well as (b) collaborate with public and private enterprises that want to build sustainable social and tech environments in a CAE. Please come join us as we discuss new ways for the Digital Transformation Era to benefit everyday people, professionals, and humanity at large.

WORKSHOP TOPICS AND DATES

WORKSHOP 1 | (11/6)

Fundamentals of Data Sovereignty I | Phygital Presence

“Phygital Presence,” the first segment of the Intro to Data Sovereignty Workshop Series, asks: How do we become present with our data? By exploring this question, we study what it means to be with one’s data in real-time physically and digitally—or phygitally—and shed light on the significant changes that have taken place over the last three decades since the Internet’s inception. In this new digital landscape, data stands as an essential asset shaping industries and markets. This session encourages participants to rediscover the source of their data, and thus, aboard the journey of becoming present with their data. This allows them to explore a valuable artifact that once produced is extracted from them before they have the opportunity to understand what it is, how it came to be, and what it could become. As resilient communities continue to evolve, a dual-economic experience is being unveiled—one that sees people not only as consumers but as producers of valuable data, reframing their influence in the 21st century economy.

Fundamentals of Data Sovereignty II | Data Ownership

The second segment of our Intro to Data Sovereignty Workshop Series, “Data Ownership,” incites us to ponder: How can we use our data to enhance our socioeconomic mobility and community impact? This workshop shifts focus to understanding data from a “community to business” (C2B) lens, instead of the “business to business” (B2B) or “business to consumer” (B2C) models we are used to. In today’s economy, the lived experiences and shared cultures of resilient communities produce contextually-rich data that holds great value once extracted and analyzed by enterprises. However, this traditional model of value extraction often overlooks the very communities that generate this data. With the rise of UMi’s approach to Data Sovereignty (DS), there is now an opportunity for communities to take control of their own data and perhaps monetize it in order to transform it into a source of both social empowerment and economic uplift. This segment explores how even considering “ownership” from the perspective of communities could improve collaboration between communities and businesses in the Digital Age.

Fundamentals of Data Sovereignty I | Data Stewardship

“Data Stewardship” asks: How do I manage my data in collaboration with enterprises that prioritize ethical and socially responsible innovation? This final segment of our Intro to Data Sovereignty Workshop Series, meditates on how data-sovereign communities that produce contextually-rich data on top of existing civic infrastructure can act as educated managers of their own information ecology. These communities are empowered to navigate new industries and marketplaces that seek deeper, more meaningful insights from data they have collected through community-based participatory research (CBPR), market research, clinical research, and political research. “Data Stewardship” also introduces how diverse stakeholders—including non-profit, for-profit, institutional, philanthropic, and governmental entities—can benefit from culturally relevant datasets while embarking on the journey to become Data Sovereignty Certified Organizations (DSCOs). As DSCOs, these entities are now positioned to become more responsible stewards of the data they collect, ensuring that the insights derived from CBPR and other methods truly serve the communities from which they originate. By refining best practices and standards in this emerging economy, these organizations work alongside resilient communities to future-proof civic infrastructure. Ultimately, this fosters collaboration between stakeholders who can leverage this new data to create a more inclusive, ethical, socially responsible, and sustainable future amongst humanity, society, technology, and the natural environment.
