In 2023, UMi participated in the K&L Gates Conference on Ethics and AI, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University. UMi’s speaker, Phahsa Ras, introduced a novel approach to Data Sovereignty, aligning it with the ethics outlined in the NESD Proposal. The conference, featuring students, faculty, and tech leaders, addressed the growing risks AI poses to communities, emphasizing fairness, justice, and autonomy. UMi warned that students must be prepared for the shifting landscape, ensuring they understand that they are not just consumers of AI but producers of valuable, contextually rich data. By bringing Data Sovereignty into mainstream ethical discussions, UMi continues to ensure that AI development remains accountable to the communities it impacts.
